CLOYNE GAA GAME REPORTS – FOOTBALL 2008 Chapel Street Cloyne Co.Cork Ireland
County
‘A’ Junior Football Championship: Cloyne prevail in
thriller: Imokilly nominees,
Cloyne, had the narrowest of wins over a very talented White’s Cross side
in the quarter-final of the above competition in Carraig na bFhear on
Saturday evening last. After eighteen
minutes, the tie looked to be completely lop-sided as the White’s Cross
forwards had scored six points from play as against two pointed frees from
Cloyne. Apart from a decision not to award a penalty for a foul on Kevin
O’Lomasney on 11 minutes , the referee, Michael Sheedy of Shanballymore,
had little to do in a lively and exciting first
half. Despite the best
efforts of Eoin O’Sullivan and Brian McCarthy in the Cloyne defence, Kevin
Buckley and Paul O’Sullivan of White’s Cross were in lethal form scoring
five points from play in the opening half, while it took Cloyne until the
21st minute through a point by Paudie O’Sullivan to open their
account from play. In the last minute of that half, Cloyne’s James Nyhan,
who was hard-working throughout, took centre stage, scoring a great point
from the wing followed by a smart shot at goal as the ball came through to
him on the 13-metre line. While he would have been expected to score, the
Cloyne deficit of just two points (0-7 to 0-5) stood at the half-time
whistle – a scoreline which flattered them as White’s Cross had the better
of that half. On the resumption,
Cloyne, with Killian Cronin to the fore, seemed to galvanise themselves
and, playing ‘with the hill’ in very welcome sunshine, were soon on level
terms. This was achieved through a point from play by Kevin O’Lomasney,
after a great run by Nyhan and Paudie O’Sullivan, followed by a mighty
‘45’ by Colm O’Sullivan. In between, a fine passage of play from White’s
Cross was repeatedly repulsed by a resolute Cloyne
defence. A scrappy period of
play ensued with some silly tackles by White’s Cross which enabled Colm
O’Sullivan to put Cloyne into the lead for the first time. Amid mounting
tension, White’s Cross again drew level on 16 minutes through Kevin
Buckley, but up stepped Colm again with the score of the day three minutes
later. Substitute Richie Daly won a free for Cloyne on the 29th
minute which Paudie O’Sullivan converted to extend the lead to two points.
Though White’s Cross pointed on the 31st minute, it was too
little too late and Cloyne secured a great victory to advance to the
semi-final. Team: Mike Oosthuizen, Mike Naughton,
Donal O’Sullivan, James Cotter, Paul O’Sullivan, Diarmuid O’Sullivan,
Brian McCarthy, Eoin O’Sullivan, Killian O’Sullivan, Conor O’Lomasney,
Paudie O’Sullivan (0-2), James Nyhan (0-1), Eoin O’Lomasney, Kevin
O’Lomasney (0-3 [2 f]), and Colm O’Sullivan (0-5 [2f, 1‘45’). Richie Daly
substituted. Under 16 East Cork
Success: A
great ‘hooting car’ parade took place in Cloyne on Saturday afternoon last
when the Under 16 footballers brought home the East Cork trophy, having
defeated Bride Rovers by 3-10 to 1-8 at Rathcormac. Under the careful
attention of Tomás O’Brien and Alfie Considine, the players rose to the
occasion with a fine ‘away’ win. We are very proud of them.
Congratulations!
JUNIOR FOOTBALL LEAGUE (Div. 1):
Cloyne travelled to Midleton on
Friday last (July 25) to take on the Magpies in the above competition. The
game was a close one all through, with the teams on level scores (0-3) at
the interval. However, Cloyne took the points on a scoreline of 0-7 to 0-5
at full-time. Best for the winners were Killian Cronin, Eoin O’Sullivan,
Conor O’Lomasney, and James Cotter. Team: Mike Oosterhuizen, Ciarán
O’Shea, Mike Naughton, James Cotter, Brian McCarthy, Eoin O’Sullivan,
Tadhg O’Sullivan, James Nyhan (0-2), Killian Cronin, Richie Daly, Colm
O’Sullivan (0-1), Conor O’Lomasney (0-3), Daniel Philpott, Kevin
O’Lomasney, and Eoin O’Lomasney (0-1). Brian Fleming and Graham Fleming
substituted.
EAST CORK FOOTBALL
CHAMPIONSHIP: Cloyne 1-13 Glanmire
0-5 Cloyne junior footballers advanced
to the quarter-final of the ‘A’ Championship on Sunday last at
Castlemartyr with a comprehensive victory over Glanmire – whom they had
defeated in a previous round. Each side had scored four points until a
defensive lapse by the Riverstown men enabled corner-forward, Shane
O’Brien, to hit a goal shortly before the interval. This had an important
bearing on the game as Cloyne came out and dominated the second period by
hitting nine points to their rivals’ one. When referee, Ger O’Connell of
Lisgoold, sounded the final whistle, the Cloyne management team of Donie
Cahill, John O’Lomasney, and Neil Reilly had every reason to be pleased
with their team’s performance, especially as a total of eight players made
up the scoring tally. The players, officials, and supporters now look
forward to the quarter-finals draw at the East Cork
Board. Team: Mark Oosthuizen, Ian McCarthy,
Donal O’Sullivan, James Cotter, Eoin O’Sullivan, Mike Naughton (0-2),
Brian McCarthy, Killian Cronin, James Nyhan (0-2), Morrie Lynch (0-2),
Diarmuid O’Sullivan (0-3), Conor O’Lomasney (0-1), Shane O’Brien (1-0),
Kevin O’Lomasney (0-2), and Paul O’Sullivan. Colm O’Sullivan (0-1),
Grahame Fleming, Tadhg O’Sullivan, Eoin O’Lomasney, and Daniel Phillips
substituted. |
